| The United States bought the Louisiana Territory from France
for less than a cent an acre. France gave up on any nation in the New World,
so concentrated their efforts in the motherland. This also allowed the United
States to control the land from the Mississippi to the Atlantic, which was
what made up the United States until the 1850s with the wars with Mexico. |
