Basilica di San Clemente
The Basilica di San Clemente has undergone a variety of transitions over its history, spanning two-thousand years, from a house to a temple to a church, but the reason behind the continued re-use of the site and its structures is due to the significance the locals held with the site. The original use of the site was utterly forgotten due to multiple waves of devastation, but the knowledge that the site itself had importance remained in the collective memory. No one knew what the exact history of the site and building was and only knew that it was tied to Saint Clement. It was simply this connection which spurred people to come to the site for worship and protect what was there.
Thames Barrier
'The Thames Barrier - Holding back the sea, but for how long?' discuss the increased risk of flooding to the Thames Estuary around London, England. The Thames Barrier is a technological marvel built in the 1970s, but increased sea levels caused by global climate change is threatening to make the barrier obsolete and put London at risk. The paper and presentation examines the history, the causes, and presents a solution to the problem by studying what has been done in The Netherlands and Venice and applying to the Thames.
London Railways
The Victorian period marked the most rapid advancement in railroad transportation in London. The year 1837 when Queen Victoria took the throne also marked the same year that the railroads came to London for the purpose of passenger service with the construction of Euston Station. The subsequent years of Queen Victoria's reign saw 18 major terminal stations constructed in Greater London, the last one in 1899.
Le Métro de Paris
The study abroad program included a 3-credit independent study project of our choosing. The topic was very open-ended, but when I experienced the Paris Metro I knew that I wanted to write about the topic. I did a lot of research on foot myself. During my 5 week stay in Paris I traveled on all of the lines and visited about half of the 370-odd stations.
The City of Moscow
Moscow, which became as a small town that grew up around a bend in the Moskva river around 1147, has grown to become the capitol city of Russia and the largest city in Europe. The City of Moscow is an interactive website surveying the city and its features. Analysis is based on Lynch maps: Paths, Edges, Districts, Nodes, Landmarks and Public Spaces.
The Evolution of the American Kitchen
For the final project in Honors 680 we were assigned a paper about something relating to the home or the home life. My initial thinking was to write about a particular room of the house: the reduction in formality of the living and dining room or the garage, but I decided to write about how the kitchen has changed over the 300 or so years since the settlement of this country.
A Picture that tells a Story
A series of 5 photographs that tells a story. Complex, I know, but I still had fun making it. Starring my ex-roommate Brandon and our dorm kitchen.
Grimshaw Model and Webpage
Nicolas Grimshaw is known for his use of metals and glass, as this arm element connects four panes of glass to the structure on the Western Morning News Building in England. In conjunction with the Grimshaw detail earlier, we had to build a web site that showed off the building and contained information about the architect that designed the detail.
AP European History Timeline
An assignment for practice for the Advanced Placement European History test I took in May, 2003, we had to make a Timeline 'From Hell'. We were supposed to pick 5 important events from each chapter of our book and put them into a timeline. I chose to put mine into HTML.
AP European History Project
Another assignment for my AP Euro class was to pick a project to do for the end of the year after the test. I chose to do mine about the History of Architecture in Europe. I selected about 30 buildings and did some research about them. I then put them into a web-based format.
