Architecture Portfolio
For entry into the second level in my program I was required to submit a portfolio.
Architecture 210
This was a lecture class in the spring of sophomore year, however, there was a detail model project and a web design project based on the architect of the detail that we built:
Architecture 201
The second studio was different where the basis was mostly analysis and dissection of other buildings and sites in a more abstract manner There were 2 projects each with 3 exercises to them:
Architecture 200
The first studio class in the real program, held fall semester of sophomore year. Technically it was a 4 credit class but we would put in as many as 80 hours a week working on things. There were 4 exercises and 3 projects:
- Arch 200 Exercise 1
- Arch 200 Exercise 2
- Arch 200 Exercise 3
- Arch 200 Exercise 4
- Arch 200 Project 1
- Arch 200 Project 2
- Arch 200 Project 3
Architecture 100
The preliminary Architecture class fall semester of freshman year, originally of 500 students that weed out over 60% of them. There were two projects that we did, a model of a church and a chair design. There were two projects:
Honors Projects
Honors 380
This was an "Appreciating Art Class" which mostly meant that we appreciated by doing. For the final project we had to take 5 pictures that told a story:
Honors 680
This class focused on the study of home environments. For the final paper I wrote about how the American kitchen has changed over the last 300 years:
Websites
Natural Films Film Company
When my friend Justin Daering wanted to put his films online, some of which I was in or helped produce, I arranged hosting for him and designed the site. The site was challenging because it was going to be using a great deal of bandwidth because it allowed users to download the films created by us. For each of the 7 films there were 3 different formats with as much as 5 different sizes for people to download. Not surprisingly, the most popular was the largest movie on the largest size.
For the design I chose to use tab navigation along the top and bottom with grayscale parts except for the green links and pictures. It is still laid out in a table structure rather than CSS because that was before I really understood the power of it. If I ever have time I will redo it in CSS, but it isn't really as pressing as this site because while it gets several times the bandwidth, it gets significantly fewer hits. And when you look at it, a few kilobytes of text and images is incomparable to the hundreds of megabytes of movies.
Alex Fortney (.com)
This is my 'professional' website. It has most of the same content as my main site, except no forums, weblogs, or any other user-posting system that can be read by future employers or professors and such. My goal for that site was to secure my name (I didn't want some other bastard to take my name in .com form), and to create a 'censored' site.
I am particularly proud of the ability for users to pick their favorite colors, between blue, red, and green, and have the server remember their settings. It works pretty well, except that it is bound to the IP address of the user, so if they change their IP (as with dial-up) they will have to select their color again. With future versions of alexfotney.com, as well as this one, will use cookies instead. The picture I used as the background was one of my favorite shots from our trip to Europe.
If Not Winter
This is Dan Knudsen's site which right now only has his weblog but in the future it might have some of his writings and such. Most of the work was involved with customizing BBlog, a weblog system, to fit the color scheme. It was valuable because it showed me that I really hated it and that I would never use it on my own site. Dan has since become disinterested in his site and hasn't posted in 200+ days and it was never finished, but maybe someday he will pick it back up.
High School
AP Euro Project
Another assignment for my AP Euro class was to pick a project to do for the end of the year after the test. I chose to do mine about the History of Architecture in Europe. I selected about 30 buildings and did some research about them. I then put them into a web-based format.
AP Euro Timeline
An assignment for practice for the Advanced Placement European History test I took in May, 2003, we had to make a Timeline 'From Hell'. We were supposed to pick 5 important events from each chapter of our book and put them into a timeline. I chose to put mine into HTML.
